Types Disability Benefits You Could Be Entitled To

Hundreds of thousands of Illinois residents – disabled workers, survivors, the aged and those with special financial needs – receive benefits from the U.S. Social Security Administration and related state programs. The chances of becoming disabled are higher than you probably realize. The Council on Disability Awareness estimates that over one-quarter of today’s 20-year-olds will become disabled before reaching retirement.

To help disabled people pay their daily living costs, the government offers several disability benefits, such as:

  • Social Security Disability Insurance Benefits (SSD) — To qualify for SSD payments, a person must have earned sufficient work credits through taxable work. The amount of the benefit that an individual can receive is based on lifetime average earnings.
  • Supplemental Security Income Benefits (SSI) —SSI makes cash payments to disabled individuals who have limited incomes and assets. Illinois residents who qualify for SSI benefits, and even some who do not, may be eligible for supplemental payments from the state. SSI recipients may also automatically qualify for Medicaid.
  • Disabled Veterans Benefits — Veterans can be eligible for tax-free disability compensation if they suffered injuries or diseases during active duty. As a veteran, you also may be eligible for disability benefits if you have an existing disease or injury that your military service made worse. Certain disabling conditions that affect some Vietnam and Gulf War vets have a presumed service connection.
  • Disabled Widow and Widower’s Benefits — Social Security disability benefits are available for disabled widows and widowers in certain circumstances after their working spouse dies. To qualify, the widow or widower must be between ages 50-59, meet the definition of a disabled person and have a disability that began with seven years of the spouse’s death.
  • Disabled Adult Child Benefits (DAC) — DAC benefits are available to certain adults who have been disabled since childhood. Eligible people can receive benefits that are based on their parents’ work history, which can result in a higher monthly benefit. To qualify for DAC benefits, you must be 18 or older, not married and have a qualified mental or physical disability that started before you turned 22.
